Hello Everybody. This is the third installment in the multi-part series called Spotlight on Andhra Sarees. Last month we covered the Narayanapeta variety from the Telangana region. This week is a hip new reincarnation from Coastal Andhra (Kosta).

Uppada is small Village in Kothapalli Mandal of East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh. It is near the port City of Kakinada and is famous for its prawn curry.

Currently all the rage in fashionable and filmi circles, the Uppada saree is truly the trendiest variety on the market.

History

 Jamdani weaves were amongst most prized contribution to the rich textile heritage of India. This old weaving technique has been re-introduced in Uppada during the year 1988 by Ghanshyam Sarode, a well-known designer. And so a new style has been created: “Uppada Sarees”. This took almost a whole decade to become popular, and now the people are fond of the variety.

While Venkatagiri is more ceremonial, dignified, and formal, Uppada is more trendy and elegant. It ranges from casual to party wear. The colors are very bright and beautiful. It is perfect saree to give as a gift (kaanuka).
